Archie Beatonfor Euphonium and Brass Band John Masonarranged by Frode Rydland This slow air was written for violin and piano by John Mason in commemoration of the minister of Dundonald Parish Church in Ayrshire, Scotland. Mason, the current conductor of The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra in Troon, Scotland, decided to give the piece the subtitle Lament for the death of Reverend Archie Beaton. The brass band arrangement was commisioned by Arvid Anthun and Sandefjord Brass Symposium for Siddis Brass 2000. In January 2002, Rydland arranged a brass ensemble version for myself to play with the Nordic Brass Ensemble. It is a simple, but beautiful little melody with a sad undertone reflecting the solemn purpose of the composition. -Tormod Flaten |
