Grieg’s highly romantic and expressive writing, based mainly on Norwegian folk music, is widely recognised well beyond the Norwegian shores. Out of the Twelve Songs to Poems by A. O. Vinje, Op. 33 (1881), the most famous song is definitely Våren (Last Spring). Just as beautiful but perhaps not quite as famous is this song, number nine in the song cycle: Ved Rundarne (At Rondane), describing the wild mountains of the National park Rondane. The arrangement is kept in the original key of concert Db major. In this range, the solo voice stays well within the comfort zone never to become strained, and it allows the soloist to focus merely on the phrasing and expression. Ved Rundarne is recorded with the Bergen Symphonic Band on Norwegian Euphonium, where Valter Aamodt also used the original key in his scoring for wind band. -Tormod Flaten |
