Giske Svein Henrik Giske is a trumpeter with the Norwegian Army Band, Bergen, a solo cornet player at Eikanger-Bjørsvik, a much used arranger and composer and a good friend of mine for ten years. When I performed my military service with the Army Band in 1998 – 1999, we toured with the Hardanger fiddle personality Knut Buen. This resulted in a CD recording with wind band and fiddle soloist, Concerto Grotto, the following year. The music was arranged by Svein. I remembered his clean and tasteful version of the lovely hymn tune I Himmelen (In Heaven), and when planning the repertoire for Norwegian Euphonium, I asked him whether it could be transformed into a euphonium solo. The arranger writes about the piece: ‘I believe I Himmelen is one of the most beautiful Norwegian hymn tunes. This arrangement is different to other versions, both melodically and harmonically. I have tried to create atmospheres by combining folk music with sacred elements and hopefully the audience will notice these two different approaches. I was very happy when Tormod asked me to do an arrangement for euphonium, and I think his version works really well. It is very distinct and has a singing, expressive character unbound by technical limitations.’ -Tormod Flaten |
