Dyktig messingblåser med særpreg 

Velklang, men ujevne titler.

Euphonium betyr velklang, og dette instrumentet byr på akkurat det: En myk og tiltalende klangfarge som befinner seg i registeret mellom waldhorn og tuba. Tormod Flaten hører til våre fremste solister i sin sjanger, og platen «Norwegian Euphonium» viser en musiker som har musikalsk særpreg og mye å by på. Teknikken er glitrende god og imponerende i hele registeret, samtidig består ikke tolkningene til Flaten av virtuositet alene, men har en sunn musikalsk formidling som gjør inntrykk. Messingblåsere (både solister, ensembler og brass band) har en tendens til å spille teknisk «tut og kjør»-musikk uten noen egentlig dyp substans. Denne platen har også litt innslag av akkurat det, det er i de roligere og neddempede verkene at jeg virkelig kan nyte euphoniumspillet til Tormod Flaten. Som i Frode Rydlands velskrevne arrangement av Sigvart Dagslands «Michelangelo». Så enkelt kan det gjøres, men desto mer virkningsfullt. Instrumentet synger av velklang og inderlighet og blir en opplevelse jeg bvhusker. Slikt vil jeg ha mer av.

Tormod Flaten - Norwegian Euphonium (5 on the dice)

Competent brass player with character

Euphony, but variable titles.

Euphonium means euphony, and this instrument offers just that: A soft and appealing tone colour in the register between French horn and tuba. Tormod Flaten is one of our foremost soloists in his genre, and the recording «Norwegian Euphonium» shows a musician with musical character and a lot to offer. His technique is brilliantly good and impressive in the whole range, at the same time Flaten’s interpretations consist not solely of virtuosity, but they have a sound musical expression that makes an impression. Brass players (both soloists, ensembles and brass bands) have a tendency to play technical «her we go»-music without any real deep substance. This CD also contains a few elements of that, it is in the quieter and subdued works that I really can enjoy Tormod Flaten’s euphonium playing. As in Frode Rydland’s well-written arrangement of Sigvart Dagsland’s «Michelangelo». As simple as that, but even more effective. The instrument sings of euphony and sincerity and it turns into an experience which I will remember. I want more of this.
